CANDELARIA Caves

CANDELARIA CAVES NATIONAL PARK 

Are a system of caves between Chisec and Raxruh?°, in a 20 km section the Candelaria river passes trough seven big caves. These caves are considered to be one of the largest cave systems in Latin America. The main gallery has a length of 22 km, of which 12.5 km follows the underground passage of the Candelaria River. The total length of the cave system is estimated to be 80 km.

The caves were discovered on May 17th¬†of 1974 by Frenchman¬†Daniel Dreux. From may 1974 to 1975, Dreux directs the systematic exploration, topographic mapping and polyvalent studies that where conducted with a dozen speleologist and scientists. Since 2002 the qeqchi comunities of Muqbilh?° I and Candelaria Camposanto had the managment of¬†¬†The National Park Candelaria Caves.

LANQUIN Caves

LANQUIN CAVES NATIONAL PARK 

Located on the Municipality of Lanqu??n, Alta Verapaz. The caves are located 1 km from the town center of Lanquin, this national park was one of the first protected areas declared in Guatemala. It is an enormous and beautiful complex with chambers and rooms, limestone formations of extraordinary beauty of an infinite nature. The Lanquin caves are also a sacred site used by the many of the Mayas from all over Guatemala, who believe the cave is the “heart of heaven”.

Lanqu??n was declare National Park at 1956 for it’s natural beauties, at 1970 was declare National Monument and at 1997 was declare Cultural Heritage. Lanqu??n caves and Semuc Champey are very important tourist destinies of Alta Verapaz region.
