LANQUIN Caves

LANQUIN CAVES NATIONAL PARK 

Located on the Municipality of Lanqu??n, Alta Verapaz. The caves are located 1 km from the town center of Lanquin, this national park was one of the first protected areas declared in Guatemala. It is an enormous and beautiful complex with chambers and rooms, limestone formations of extraordinary beauty of an infinite nature. The Lanquin caves are also a sacred site used by the many of the Mayas from all over Guatemala, who believe the cave is the “heart of heaven”.

Lanqu??n was declare National Park at 1956 for it’s natural beauties, at 1970 was declare National Monument and at 1997 was declare Cultural Heritage. Lanqu??n caves and Semuc Champey are very important tourist destinies of Alta Verapaz region.

EL QUETZAL Biotope

The Biotopo Mario Dary Rivera Nature reserve, known locally simply as the Biotope del Quetzal, is a sanctuary for Guatemala’s national bird, the Quetzal. It is located in the territorial division of Baja Verapaz. This biotope has an approximate surface of 1.017 hectares, and it protects and conserves the habitat of the Quetzal. This biotope is a land filled with mountains that can reach 2.300 meters in height, numerous waterfalls, and small streams with crystal-clear water, and a dense-cloudy forest where you can find 50 species of trees. You will also see lichens, mosses, mushrooms, orchids, bromeliaceous, and other plants and epiphytes. Have been identified 150 species of birds including residents and migratory. Furthermore, in the early morning you can see the majestic quetzal. This reserve is one of the seven conservation areas of El Centro de Estudios Conservacionistas (CECON).

The Biotope it is a valuable area for connecting the cloud forest of Sierra de las Minas with cloud forests in Alta Verapaz. The Biotopo del Quetzal remains a popular spot for environmental education due to its impressive displays in the welcome center and education programs offered by local institutions and Guatemalan universities. There are well-maintained trails all through the reserve that allow for easy access. Simply by visiting the reserve and paying the entrance fee you are supporting the maintenance and vigilance of this protected area.
