News 1 Letter from Bryan Bland. Sunbird Tours for INGUAT Director of Guatemala Board of Tourism 2008 Dear Mr Orozco,
I have just returned from the Fourth International Birdwatching Encounter and must write to tell you how impressed I was by this event. The basic concept - to promote Guatemala as an important ecotourism destination equal to any in the world - was well conceived and the execution could not be faulted. Your whole team (Ana Smith, Bitty Ramirez Portella, Irene Rodriguez, Marco Vinicio Centeno, and so many more) must have put in a great deal of effort to ensure that such a complex operation worked so well. In particular, I must commend Ana Cristina Prem for her efficiency and her warmth in greeting all the delegates and ensuring they all identified with Guatemala and the Guatemalan people. You could not have chosen a more delightful and charming ambassador.
I can assure you that all your guests were suitably impressed with everything that Guatemala has to offer and have returned to various parts of the world determined to spread the gospel and promote Guatemalan ecotourism as much as possible. Already Mark Cocker’s column on Guatemala has appeared in The Guardian (readership one million) and his four-page article in the BBC Wildlife magazine (the most respected wildlife journal in Europe, readership 175,000) will appear in June. There will also be a follow-up in Birding World to complement my article last year on ‘Guatemala, the new birding Mecca in Central America’. And of course personal recommendations left, right and centre. I am convinced that within a few years Guatemala will have secured its rightful share of this market alongside Mexico, Belize, and Costa Rica.
Thankyou again for your hospitality. I shall continue to do everything possible to point the birdwatchers of Europe in your direction.
Very sincerely yours Bryan Bland, Director, Sunbird Tours.
